Price per wear: Why fast fashion costs more than “real” clothes.
If you’re on a budget and looking for affordable clothing, you’re not alone. One not so obvious way to evaluate the price of an item is to calculate its cost per wear. With the rise of fast fashion, we have come to expect our clothing to cost next to nothing. And though we willingly accept lower prices on garments, there’s no compromising on certain items like smartphones and laptops. Granted, you are willing to invest in these items because you expect to get good use out of them and you expect them to be around a while. But why should your expect any less from your clothing?
Consider two “similar” blouses. The first you purchase from a popular fast fashion retailer – there are many of them out there – H&M and Zara to name a few – and you pay $49.90. You wear and wash the garment 10 times when it starts to deteriorate and becomes unwearable. At $49.90, each time you wore the garment (total of 10 times), it cost you $4.99.
Frustrated, you decide to purchase a similarly styled blouse from a higher quality brand and pay 3 times as much for it – $150. However, the blouse is well made, stands up to the wash and wears well. For one year, you wear the blouse once per week for a total of 52 wears. At $150 for the shirt, that’s $2.88 per wear and the shirt still has lots of life left. Each time you wear it, the cost per wear decreases.
To get the same number of wears from the lesser quality blouse, – 52 – you would have had to purchase 5.2 blouses. At $49.90 per blouse, that’s a total of $259.48. Now that’s expensive!
